10 Years of Building Equality:

For the past 10 years, Building Equality has been laying the foundations for change, constructing a more inclusive industry, and championing LGBTQ+ representation across the construction and built environment sectors. What started as a small group of passionate individuals has grown into a nationwide movement, cementing industry-wide commitment to equality.
Since its inception, Building Equality has been busy putting inclusivity on the industry blueprint, and the results speak for themselves:
Growing Network
From a few passionate advocates to a thriving, multi-city network with over 60 organisations on board, we’ve built something truly solid.
Raising Visibility
We’ve put LGBTQ+ inclusion front and centre at major industry events like UK Construction Week, MIPIM, and London Build, ensuring diversity isn’t just a side project.
Pride in Construction
Marching in Pride parades across the country, proudly donning rainbow high-vis vests and even showcasing our iconic rainbow JCBs – because inclusion should be as bold as a freshly painted site hoarding!
Educational Initiatives
Running workshops, panel discussions, and mentoring schemes to support LGBTQ+ professionals and build more inclusive workplaces brick by brick.
Policy Influence
Collaborating with organisations like Stonewall, CITB, and industry bodies to reinforce the scaffolding of workplace equality and safety.

"Over the last 10 years, I would say there has been a growing sense of awareness and engagement with LGBT+ matters. As time has evolved, older attitudes, at least being vocalized, have fallen away, and there seems to be a genuine interest from the mainstream in participating in Pride events, for example. However, those of us involved with Building Equality regionally and generally in a privileged position—working in city center offices mostly staffed by like-minded individuals—know that the harder-to-reach groups, such as site workers, remain, well, harder to reach. As ever, we are keen to make efforts to involve this group in our sector as much as possible"
