Supporting Sparkle

July 2024

For several years, we've been a committed supporter of Sparkle, contributing through volunteering, donations, and even collaborating on the design of the national trans monument in Sackville Gardens. However, this year, our commitment was more crucial than ever.

Did you know that it costs approximately £88,000 to organize the Sparkle Weekend? The charity has been running the festival for 19 years and is unwavering in its determination to keep this event free and accessible to everyone, which makes financial support from external groups vital. Unfortunately, the LGBTQIA+ sector has faced financial challenges, with charities receiving diminishing funding and Sparkle faced with further struggles after their headline sponsorship pulled out 7 weeks before the event leaving them thousands of pounds short of funds.

To ensure the success of Sparkle, we rallied around some of our partner companies. Arup, Jacobs, Speedy Hire, Stantec, and Mott McDonald generously contributed extra sponsorship towards the remaining costs. Many volunteers from those companies and AECOM, AtkinRéalis and BDP supported on the day to ensure the festival ran smoothly. Their support exemplifies the spirit of unity and shared purpose within our community.

During the weekend, we hosted a stall with engaging activities for families. From colouring in, free stickers and getting the chance to decorate hard hats, it was a delightful experience meeting everyone. More importantly, these interactions provided an opportunity to discuss how we’re advancing the industry, ensuring that everyone—regardless of their gender or identify journey—is treated with respect and dignity.

We were asked to speak at the event, so Greater Manchester Co-Chair Lynne spoke to the Sparkle crowds on the Saturday:

Lynne's Speech

"It’s brilliant to see so many people here today at Sparkle Weekend, a celebration of the trans+ community and a testament to our collective commitment to equality, inclusion, and the celebration of diversity. Today, I am honoured to speak to you on behalf of Building Equality. We are an organisation dedicated to promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion within the construction, engineering, and built environment industry.

Building Equality is an alliance of consultants, engineers, developers, contractors, clients, and professional institutions united by a common goal: to create a more inclusive and supportive built environment for LGBTQ+ individuals across the UK. Our mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, feels valued and respected in our industry.

Supporting Sparkle Weekend is a natural extension of our mission. This event embodies the values we hold dear: visibility, acceptance, and the celebration of diversity. We stand in solidarity with the trans+ community and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive society.

Building Equality starts with awareness. This is the first step towards change, and we are dedicated to fostering a culture of understanding and empathy. We raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues within the construction and engineering sector through workshops, training sessions, and campaigns. We educate our colleagues about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and the importance of creating inclusive workplaces.

We believe in the power of role models. We support and encourage LGBTQ+ and Ally role models within our industry. By sharing their stories and experiences, our role models inspire others and demonstrate that it is possible to be successful and authentic in our industry. Representation matters, and we are committed to amplifying the voices of LGBTQ+ individuals.

We amplify the voices of the trans+ community. By listening to stories and experiences and sharing these, we can help to break down stereotypes and build a more inclusive society. Let’s use our platforms, whether big or small, to uplift these voices and ensure they are heard.

Creating inclusive workplaces is at the heart of what we do. We work with companies to embed LGBTQ+ inclusion into their policies and practices. This includes everything from inclusive hiring practices to creating safe spaces where everyone feels welcome. Our goal is to ensure that every workplace in our industry is a place where everyone can thrive.

Lastly, we are allies in action, not just in words. This means standing up against transphobia and discrimination whenever we encounter it. It means supporting trans+ individuals in our lives, whether colleagues, friends, or family members. It means showing up, speaking out, and being there for the community, not just during Sparkle Weekend, but every day.

Let’s continue to work together, raise awareness, and celebrate diversity. Together, we can build a brighter, more inclusive future for us all.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of Sparkle Weekend!"
